Mould: How to Prevent it this Winter!

As winter approaches, most of us focus on keeping our homes warm and cosy. But with the colder temperatures comes a common household issue, mould. Mould loves damp, cool conditions, and when we turn up the heating and reduce ventilation, our homes become the perfect place for it to grow. Not only is it unsightly, but mould can also affect your health, damage walls, ceilings, and furniture.
Luckily, with a few simple steps you can help prevent mould from taking over your home this winter!
Limit Indoor Drying When Possible
Drying clothes indoors, especially on radiators, adds moisture to the air, creating the perfect environment for condensation and mould. If drying laundry outside isn’t an option and with the great British weather it rarely is, try to dry clothes in a room where you can open a window to ventilate and let the moisture escape.
Let Moisture Out, Not In
After a hot shower, boiling the kettle, or cooking up a storm, humidity levels soar in your bathroom and kitchen. If there’s no extractor fan or vents, this can turn into condensation throughout your home. Keep the door shut to contain the moisture, then open a window to let it disperse naturally.
Freshen Up Your Indoor Air
Did you know your home’s indoor air can be more polluted than outside? Household cleaners, sprays, air fresheners, and other chemicals leave harmful particles in the air. Whenever you can, open your windows just a crack to let in some fresh air and give your home a detox.
Declutter for Better Airflow
We all love a good spring clean, but winter is a great time to declutter, too! The more belongings we have stuffed in cupboards and wardrobes, the less space there is for air to circulate and airflow is key to preventing mould. Get rid of unwanted clutter and in return you will better air circulation and a healthier home.
Dehumidifier
Investing in a dehumidifier can be a great way to prevent mould as well as purifying the air as it reduces the amount of moisture and impurities within your home. Dehumidifiers can prevent condensation from forming on windows and walls, making it a smart investment for the colder, wetter months.
Preventing mould this winter doesn’t need to be difficult or cost a fortune! Keep the air flowing and you’ll have a fresher, mould free home all year round!
