Top Tips to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer ❄️☀️

It feels like one of the hottest and longest summers we’ve had in a long time and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon! We know we shouldn’t complain, but with homes becoming more eco-friendly and designed to keep the heat in, we’ve really been struggling. So we went looking for ways to make our space more comfortable and thought we’d share what we’ve learned to help you keep your home cool this summer too.

Here are some simple, practical tips to help you stay cool, sleep better, and enjoy the sunshine without melting!

Close Curtains and Blinds During the Day☀️

One of the easiest ways to stop your home from turning into a greenhouse is to block out the sun. Keep curtains, blinds, or shutters closed during the hottest part of the day – especially on south- and west-facing windows. If you can, go for light-coloured or reflective blinds as they help bounce the heat back outside.

Open Windows at Night🌛

When the sun goes down and the air cools, open up your windows and let the breeze through. If it’s safe to do so, try to open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a cross-breeze and move that cooler air through the house.

Swap Your Bulbs💡

Did you know traditional bulbs give off a surprising amount of heat? Switching to LED bulbs keeps things cooler and saves energy too!

Use Fans Cleverly🪭

Fans don’t actually lower the temperature, but they do make you feel cooler. Set ceiling fans to spin anti-clockwise or use a portable fan with a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of it for an extra chill.

Cook Outside (If You Can!)🍗

Cooking on the hob or in the oven pumps heat into your kitchen and lingers for hours. Try no-cook meals, use the microwave, air-fryer or take dinner outside to the barbecue when it’s too hot to handle indoors.

Bring in Some Plants🪴

Plants aren’t just pretty – they can help cool things down too. Outdoors, trees or climbing plants can shade your home from the sun. Indoors, houseplants can help improve air quality and keep humidity in check.

Run Appliances Off-Peak🧺

Dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers all pump out heat. If you can, run them early in the morning or later in the evening or skip the dryer and hang your washing out in the sunshine!

We all love a bit of sunshine, but nobody wants to feel like they’re living in a sauna. With a few small changes, you can keep your home cooler, more comfortable and still enjoy everything summer has to offer.
